Energy efficiency and consumption reduction: electric motors

Publicado em 9 de December de 2020

High energy tariffs lead companies to look for options to save energy and, moreover, improve processes. The implementation of energy efficiency projects is one way to reduce costs and increase competitiveness.

According to Eletrobrás industries consume 42% of Brazilian electricity. In this context electric motors are responsible for almost 70% of all energy used in industrial processes. If we consider only Brazil, it is estimated that there are more than 20 million three-phase electric motors. These motors consume 144 GWh on average per year, which is equivalent to 24.5% of national electricity production. It can be said that the driving force has the best opportunities for reducing consumption.

The Brazilian Maintenance Association (ABRAMAN) comments that the average age of Brazilian machinery is 17 years. This is a factor that must be considered because the older the machine is, the worse is its performance. This reflects in the productivity of the industry. Old motors, oversized motors or motors that have undergone many repairs can be considered as the most energy-consuming equipment in the industry.

Replacing old motors for higher-performance motors can lead to an average saving of 9.3%. In addition, the replacement of motors also contributes to the reduction of CO2 emissions. According to the National Confederation of Industries (CNI), replacing electric motors in operation has the potential to generate 23,640 GWh of conserved energy. This is one of the factors that make energy efficiency actions so relevant. Through these actions economic growth is encouraged and the company’s competitiveness increases.

Investing in electrical energy efficiency is investing in the future of your company. In addition to reducing costs it is a sustainable action that values your institution’s image.
